How we Raise Our Puppies
From birth we are interacting with the dam and her puppies. At birth we allow the dam to clean and let the newborn puppy suckle for a few minutes. We then get an initial weight on the pup and check them over for identifying markings and general health. Pups are then given back to mother to nurture as she delivers the rest of her litter.
Daily we weigh the puppies to ensure they are gaining weight appropriately, we continue these daily weights for 2 weeks. We are looking for a 5-10% increase daily from their birth weight. (when they are born weighing 18oz this is only an increase of 1-2oz per day)
After about 5 days we start Bio-Sensor training on the pups daily. The Bio-Sensor or "Superdog" program was started by the US Military in the late 60's to improve the dogs ability to handle stress. They found that this early stimulation had plenty of beneficial effects:
- Improved cardio vascular performance (heart rate)
- Stronger heart beats
- Stronger adrenal glands
- More tolerance to stress
- Greater resistance to disease
Additionally it:
- Gets the puppies used to be handled
- Allows puppies to grow bonds outside their litter mates and mother making a transition to a new home less stressful
- Allows us to maintain a constant observation of the puppy , evaluating how it interacts.
Overall these 5 exercises get your puppy used to be handled, with out stressing them out.
We start the de-worming cycle at 3 weeks of the pups and mom. Most puppies can develop worms even if the mother appears worm free. Worms are picked up in dirt and though our dogs are kept mostly indoors, they do go out in the yard often and can pick up these parasites. We use Rx de-worming medication supplied by our vet, not OTC medications. Most OTC meds do not do a sufficient job.
between 3 and 4 weeks we start weaning the pups with a goal to have them away from mom completely by 5 week to 6 weeks. We use a combination of Puppy Formula, rice cereal and puppy kibble for the weaning process , gradually decreasing the amount of fluid in the mix over the 2 weeks. During this period we increase the stimulation they are exposed to, including hearing the vacuum cleaner, allowing them to explore more regions of the house under supervision and the addition of stimulating toys. We also begin clicker training and basic commands. this is also when we start potty training.
At 6 weeks our puppies all receive their shots. At this time we start socialization and separation training. We take a few at a time out to different environments leaving their littermates at home. This exposes the puppies to new environments and teaches them its OK to be separated from their pack.
As you can see we don't leave all this up to you the new puppy owner, we start you puppy on the right track in hopes to deliver to you an outstanding edition to your family.
Purchasing a Puppy
We sell all our puppies as companions. This means they are all sold on a contract requiring the buyer to get them spayed or neutered by 6 months of age. All puppies can be registered with the AKC on a limited registration, this means your new puppy can be registered but none of their progeny can be. All our puppies come with a Health Guarantee.
