Activities

Siberian Huskies are intelligent and athletic dogs, They enjoy activities that allow them to run and use their intelligence.

Sledding or Mushing

When people think of Siberian Husky's the first thing they think of is sled dogs. Siberians made their way into sledding in the early 1900's in Alaska, and have become the premier breed to use in Single Breed team events since (Today many sled dog teams are made up of the Alaskan Husky and Siberian Sled dog teams, these are actually mixed breeds that have evolved from Siberian huskies ) In Michigan we have an active group of sledders with the Mid Union Sled Haulers. Race divisions range from 1 dog to 7 dog teams. For more information, go to their website here. The Siberian Husky Club of Greater Detroit has programs for 4, 6 and 8 dog teams. This can be an expensive activity when you take into consideration the cost of the sled, harnesses, lines and other equipment plus hours of training.

Skijoring

Basically its cross country skiing with 1 or 2 dogs pulling you along. This is a great event to do if you have only 1 Siberian and don't want to dive into sledding. Skijoring requires you to have the typical equipment for cross country skiing as well as a harness for the dog and yourself. Again Mid-Union Sled Haulers offers events, There is also the Midwest Skijorers Club. This is a lower cost event compared to Mushing.

Working Pack Dog

Working Pack Dog is a titled event offered through the AKC. The Siberian Husky Club of Greater Detroit has an active program any purebred Siberian Husky can get involved in. Basically Its taking your dog for a walk on a nature trail while it carries a load in a dog back pack. This is a low cost fun event you can do with your Siberian husky that is enjoyable for both you and your dog as well as a great activity for a healthy life style.

This event takes little equipment aside from the dog pack that can run you between $50 and $150. SHCGD information is here.

Agility

Yes a Siberian husky can be trained to do agility. Agility is an event at many dog shows that involves your dog running a series of obstacles in proper order as a race against the course and time. This event is sponsored by many individual clubs throughout Michigan. Aside from time and training, this event is relatively low in cost.

Obedience and Rally-O

These are similar activities, Obedience and Rally-O are both sanctioned events at most AKC and UKC events. They entail you ad your dog running through a series of stations and showing off your dogs ability to listen and obey obedience commands. Training and more information can be obtained through the different Clubs and many training facilities.
